Academic Programmes

Innovative subject programmes provide many different learning opportunities for students to gain qualifications in both conventional and vocational courses. We aim to provide a challenging, varied and dynamic learning environment for all students.

The subject range is suited to students of all aptitudes and abilities. However, we place a very strong emphasis on achievement in Literacy and Numeracy. We recognise that every student should leave school with no less than a solid grounding in these areas which are so important for adult life.

We prepare students to make well-informed choices about the subjects they will specialise in when they reach the senior school.

Junior School

Students entering school in Year 9 take a broad range of subjects designed to form a solid foundation for future education and for general life skills.

In Years 9 and 10 students are grouped in classes according to ability. Extension classes at both Year 9 and Year 10, and a mentoring programme for gifted students, provide opportunities for students to be extended wherever possible. Students who need academic reinforcement programmes are placed in one of our Integrated Studies classes. These classes have a strong literacy and numeracy focus, and they ease the transition to secondary school through contact with a reduced number of teachers in a homeroom situation.

Graduation Programme

Junior students gain points each week for assessment, equipment, homework, attendance and behaviour. Gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded each term. Students who receive these certificates are able to graduate to the next year level. Other students remain behind for reinforcement tuition either during the holidays or the following year. Students excelling in this programme gain special certificates at junior prizegiving. Our experience is that the Junior Graduation Programme provides a strong incentive for students to succeed, resulting in improved academic performance.

Senior School

Seniors put together individual programmes based on their interests and strengths and are encouraged to follow multi-level courses of study. A wide, academic and challenging curriculum prepares students for future life. In all subjects extension is encouraged and students ASPIRE to excel towards subject and NCEA endorsements. We prepare our students for national qualifications at Years 11, 12 and 13 and we are proud of the high standards they achieve.
