Biology helps us understand the big picture of life on Earth. This course focuses on New Zealand ecosystems, human biology and health, and develops understanding of genetic variation to lead into Level 2 Biology. This course has a strong focus on literacy strategies and provides a more supported approach to the learning of biology concepts.

Prerequisites: A Level 1 Science course is compulsory.  Participation in two Science courses at this level is at the discretion of the Head of Learning Area Ms Mora.

Level 1 Biology is a full year course, of five topics, that work towards gaining 18 Level One NCEA credits. Three of the standards are assessed internally (11 credits), the two remaining standards are externally assessed (7 credits).

Students need to have 12 credits at Level 1 to be eligible for entry into the Level 2 Biology and Level 2 Science courses.

Stationary Requirements: To ensure that students can access all course work during the year, particularly for the external standards, all notes and exercises are to be completed in a 1B8 Hardcover exercise book. Students are issued with two write on workbooks ‘NCEA 1.3 AND 1.9 workbooks’ at a cost of $8.50 each.
