Year 12 Chemistry

Course Code:
12Chem
Year Level:
Year 12
NCEA Level:
2
Learning Area:

Department / Subject Area:

Chemistry is the study of change. Students will gain an understanding of the composition and properties of the materials that make up our universe. They will study the changes matter undergoes and the energy involved. They will develop an understanding of theories used to explain observations about chemical systems.  Level 2 Chemistry lays the foundation for success in Chemistry at Level 3 and beyond.

Prerequisites: 12 Level 1 Science Credits including Science 1.8 Chemical Reactions.

Level Two Chemistry is a full year course, of five topics, that works towards gaining 19 Level Two NCEA credits. Three of the standards are assessed internally (10 credits), the two remaining standards are externally assessed (9 credits).

Students need to gain at least 14 credits in Level 2 Chemistry to be eligible for entry into the Level 3 Chemistry course.

The Science Learning Area website provides an online learning environment students can use to revise their work and prepare for future learning. They are able to complete quizzes, contribute to forums, access resources and receive important notices. The site is accessed by going to http://tinyurl.com/LCSciencePage.

Stationary Requirements: To ensure that students can access all course work during the year, particularly for the external standards, all notes and exercises are to be completed in a 1B8 Hardcover exercise book. Students are issued with a write on workbook ‘Beginning Chemistry Workbook’ at a cost of $30.
