Year 13 Biology

Course Code:

Year Level:
Year 13
NCEA Level:
3
Learning Area:

Department / Subject Area:

Level 3 Biology explores the interactions and behaviours of organisms in response to both their external and internal environments. We study the evolutionary mechanisms that contribute to biodiversity and the ways humans use this knowledge for our benefit. We also examine and evaluate current scientific evidence for our own evolution. Level 3 Biology opens up many career opportunities and is at the heart of many social and economic issues.

Prerequisites: 12 Level 2 Biology credits.

Level 3 Biology is a full year course, of five topics, that work towards gaining 19 level three NCEA credits. Three of the standards are assessed internally (10 credits), the two remaining standards are externally assessed (9 credits).

Students need to gain 14 credits at Level 3 to enter a Biology Course at University level.

The Science Learning Area website provides an online learning environment students can use to revise their work and prepare for future learning. They will be able to complete quizzes, contribute to forums, access resources and receive important notices. The site is accessed by going to http://tinyurl.com/LCSciencePage.

Stationary Requirements: To ensure that students can access all course work during the year, particularly for the external standards, all notes and exercises are to be completed in a 1B8 Hardcover exercise book. Students are issued with two write on workbooks ‘NCEA Level 3 Biology Externals’ and ‘NCEA Level 3 Biology Internals’ at a cost of $20 (total cost).
