Culture GroupsKapa Haka Cultural group

Linwood College has a strong presence of Maori students within its community. As part of this Linwood College has always offered opportunities for their Maori students to succeed and be recognised for their abilities and talents.

One way in which this is achieved is through Maori Performing Arts or Kapa Haka. Kapa Haka has been an integral part if the College's culture for a number of years and focuses on strengthening the relationships between students and their own cultural identity.

Kapa Haka has gone from strength to strength as the years have gone by and have proudly represented the College at a variety of events including the Secondary Schools Regional Haka Competitions which are held every two years. They also perform at Parents' Evenings, special assemblies and prize givings.

In 2011 Kapa Haka is once again practicing for the regional competitions and is open to everyone who wishes to participate.

Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nona te ngahere. Ko te manu e kai ana i te matauranga, nona te ao.
The bird who partakes of the miro berry knows only the forest. The bird who partakes of knowledge, knows the world.

Pacifika Cultural group

Linwood College has had a strong history in the Performing Arts area. The Pasifika Culture Group has been running in the college for the last six years.

The purpose of the group is to allow students to stand strong in their own culture, however, it is open to anyone to join and learn about the cultural diversity of Linwood College.

The Pasifika Culture Group has performed on many occasions for a number of reasons, including Polyfest, which is an annual event, parent information evenings, and special assemblies.

In 2010 the Fijian Indian Dance Group was established. This group performed at a Pasifika Parents’ Night, amazing all those present with their beautiful dancing and elaborate costumes.

In 2011 we are gearing up to once again perform at Polyfest at the end of Term 2. It may be a smaller event than usual but it will still be an occasion to showcase the talents of our students and to celebrate the cultural diversity of Linwood College.
