Robotics Nationals: Silver Medal Achieved

Robotics Students gain Silver Medal at RoboCup Nationals in Wellington
On Saturday 3 September two Robotics teams, accompanied by Diane Atkins and Kerry Fraser, travelled to Wellington to compete against 8 other schools from around New Zealand. The National RoboCup competition took place at Capital E which was a great venue right in the Capital City.
After an exciting competition, 2nd place was awarded to Team Spikeware – Robert Fraser, Michael Fan and Chase Limmer. Our other team Overkill gained 4th placing with Harry Loughnan and Chris Cooper. This is their third year of competitions and these students can be proud of their achievements for Linwood College both regionally and nationally.
Well Being for Youth Conference

Students from high schools over Christchurch assembled to discuss important issues effecting youth around the earthquake. Many topics were discussed from boredom to stress related issues and the struggles students are facing with the upcoming exams, and striving to achieve excellence. It was then up to us, the students of Christchurch to find a resolution to these problems and design a project plan. This conference gave the Ministry of Education, CERA and the District Health Board a chance to listen directly to students from Christchurch about the hardships we are facing. This was a great opportunity for Linwood College as it gave the students a voice in the recovering process that Christchurch is facing, the city that we will inherit and gave us direct links to the Otautahi Youth Council. We congratulate and thank the students that attended for representing Linwood College and for undertaking this wonderful opportunity. (Summer McKinnon- Year 12)

Jazz Success - Southern Jam Interschools Competition

The Linwood College Jazz Band has scooped major prizes at the Southern Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim ever since it first participated in 2004. Their performance this year, under the leadership of Mr Andrew Murphy, was no exception.
The Jazz Band and Jazz Combo both received Gold Awards at the Festival’s award ceremony last weekend.
Individual awards:
Isaac McClusky - Best Trombone and Best Soloist
Alister Winter - (double bass) for Best Rhythm Section Player.
Reuben Jensen (trombone), Isaac McClusky (bass trombone) and Karly Martin (tenor saxophone) were also selected for the Gala Concert’s All Stars Band on the awards night.
This is a phenomenal result, especially considering the difficulties of last term.
